One of the most difficult things for a writer to set down is an action scene. (The most difficult is a sex scene, but let’s not even go there! Suffice it to say that it seems that for men, writing the scene often ends up resembling the description of the operation of a car engine, and for women, it often ends up described sort of like a wave breaking on the beach and then ebbing away … and both of these are boring. If the real-life equivalent was that boring, the population would be much smaller.)
